OUR ONLINE CHECKOUT is CLOSED and we are NOT accepting any NEW orders at this time.

We are still fulfilling and shipping previously submitted and/or delayed order requests (as product availability allows) UNTIL NOVEMBER 15th 2022.

But after November 15th, all still pending backordered unshipped items will be automatically CANCELLED **(except for any special ordered drop-shipped or made/machined-to-order items).

Our ability to respond to emails is greatly hampered by being under-staffed during this downsize transition time. But we continue to endeavor to answer email inquiries as best we can. And we will continue responding to emails through until early March 2023 because we are wholly committed to resolving any other issues that may arise from previous sales. It is still UNCERTAIN, but we may re-open a substantially downsized version of our store again in the Spring of 2023.

We sincerely appreciate your patience, understanding during this period of restructuring and/or closing. And a huge thank you to all of you whose support and loyalty we have been the beneficiary of over the 23 years that we have worked diligently to support the information and parts needs of the aircooled VW community!

ACN VW Vanagon Tube Bumper, Rear, 1980-92 VW Vanagon
ACN VW Vanagon Tube Bumper 3", Rear, 1980-92 VW Vanagon
Bumper shown has Optional 2" Receiver BELOW Lower Tube (Extra Cost), which creates a slight reduction in Departure Angle Clearance.

VW Vanagon Tube Bumpers were designed/engineered by Aircooled.Net and specifically built for the Vanagon crowd. They fit 1980-1992 T3 Vanagons! Since we at Aircooled.Net are closet Vanagon Enthusiasts ourselves, and were less than thrilled with the offerings of the time, we decided to carefully incorporate every possible detail into our 3" tube bumpers, sometimes called "Big" or "Beefy" bumpers. We intended these to be used on the 4WD VW Syncro, but many put them on their 2WD Beach Vanagons too!

This rear bumper features an optional top tube "cutout" to clear the license plate access area so you can check and add oil without any obstruction; this design feature also allowed us to mount the rear bumper much higher than if the cutout was not there, which gives you more ground clearance and a better departure angle!

We offer a couple different versions of the optional 2" receivers so you can install bike racks, BBQ Stands, Cooler Mounts, or Light Duty Towing. You can choose to have the Receiver below the lower tube, or IN the Lower Tube. If you install it in the Lower Tube, you will have to modify whatever you are installing into the Bumper, since the higher location does not allow it to go in the standard amount of depth. This means the hole for the pin won't line up! No worries, just install it and re-drill the pin hole for the new depth, and you are done.

We have also incorporated a "shadow package" into the our bumpers, so you don't see the "ugly" bodywork hidden behind the stock bumper; and it IS VERY UGLY back there!

Because of the size of these bumpers, they must be shipped via TRUCK FREIGHT. Submit your order with a Commercial/business Address to ship to, or tell us in your Order Notes that you will pickup at the terminal -- Truck delivery to a residential address usually costs an extra $75-$100 for a "residential delivery surcharge".

Because of shipping costs, we recommend you order front and rear at the same time. These bumpers are both large and heavy, so shipping on costs are substantial. Shipping to east coast commercial location is approximately $300-350 per pair (minimum $200 for single). To the Western states varies quite a bit and ranges from $400 to $650 per pair (could be anywhere from $300 - $450 for single). We will confirm the final/verified shipping cost for you by address specific quote a few days after we receive your order.

Price: $679.95
Restrictions: Shipping within Continental USA only. No cross border or International Shipment is available.
Usually Dropships: in 3-4 weeks after made-to-order

Item Features

These are constructed with .095" Wall 3" diameter steel tubing, and bolt to the stock bumper bracket locations. New mounting bolts are supplied with these new bumpers.

Installation is done with a ratchet and 3/4" socket, once you get the stock bumpers and bumper-brackets off! MINOR filing of the stock bolt-holes may be required, if it's not a perfect fit. For reference, it took us 5 minutes with a rat-tail file when we installed ours. Removing the old bumper takes a lot longer then bolting this one up!

We designed this bumper so that it didn't decrease the vehicle's "approach and departure angle". This angle determines how steep an incline the van can go up or down without scraping the overhang when the wheel is in the trough (where the incline meets the level ground).

Westfalia and Weekender Owners will LOVE the Optional Diamond Plate on the bumpers, since it allows easy non-skid access to the top of their rig! Beach Cruisers will usually prefer to not have the diamond plate, it's lighter (less likely to get caught in soft sand) and one less place for salt to accumulate.

To aid in the longevity, and to prevent rust on powder coated black parts, we recommend that you apply a polish or wax to all backside and welded areas before assembling and installing.

We also recommend sealing areas that are impossible to powder coat with a primer or clear coat paint. Areas of particular attention should be all welds, backsides, Butt seams, and where wires meet the plates. This procedure must be followed in areas where there are severe weather conditions. If there is salt on the road, it may be necessary to clean parts daily. It is YOUR responsibility to protect the finish with applications of a non-abrasive polish or wax. If you are really concerned about the "Quality" of the Powder Coating Job, we recommend you get these BARE (RAW), and have them coated locally so any problems can be addressed on your end. But our cost on the Powder Coating can't be beat!
