These must be installed BEFORE the heads and push rod tubes are installed, unless you are using Spring Loaded Push Rod Tubes. We prefer these square shaped tins over the "Super Cool Tins" that many people use. These also MUST be used in conjunction with "Sled Tins" to keep air rushing beneath the engine from "backing up" the cooling air's escape, out and back! You need TWO of these do to one engine. These snap onto the lower inner head studs, and "block" the air that flows between the cylinders, fore/aft to cool the lower side of the cylinder. These are often missing, and this results in a significant temperature difference from cylinder upper and lower, and lessens cylinder lifespan because they distort and warp (non round).

Permatex Ultra Copper RTV Sealant (Silicone), 3oz Tube is an excellent sealant for cylinder bases, and cylinder shims. Wipe on a thin coat, let it skin up then install the parts. Also great for valve cover gaskets, oil strainer and generator stand gaskets, etc. Permatex makes several different formulations of RTV, we only carry 2 of them because these 2 cover all applications that we need for our Vintage VWs.

This the High Quality GERMAN Gasket Set you have been looking for for your 1300-1600cc VW engine. Cheap kits often have cracked seals NEW IN THE PACKAGE! This kit covers a variety of engines, and comes Silicone Pushrod Tube Seals! This kit has no flywheel seal.

After honing and final cleaning of the cylinders, wipe the cylinderwalls with a lint-free rag using a lacquer thinner or brake cleaner. Then wipe the cylinders with a light penetrating oi, and wipe them dry with a clean rag (to ensure the crosshatch is clean).

Apply the Quick Seat with your finger to the entire cylinder. If the cylinder wall was clean the powder will turn the cylinder a greenish tint. If the powder turns the cylinder a black or silverish color, the crosshatch was still dirty, and you need to reclean the cylinders and re-apply.

It's important for you to know that when we balance the pistons and wrist pins, they are in MATCHED PAIRS. You must make sure you do not swap pins and pistons during the cleaning and assembly process! Pins are sometimes 1.5g out, and we often have a heavy pin with a light piston, and a light pin with a heavy piston. If you mix them you no longer have a balanced set!
