This is a 1 5/8" (42mm) exhaust system, which is a HUGE upgrade from the stock 1 1/4" (32mm) system. ACN Recommends that you use dual carbs since this header is not available with pre-heat capability. This muffler uses 1.7/1.8L gaskets, so you don't need "custom" gaskets when you need to replace them. Also, the #2 primary is routed such that it interferes with the stock thermostat (which can't be retained). Valve adjustment is super easy, the valve covers remain completely accessible! Furthermore, these allow you to do away with those stupid exhaust doughnuts! This kit comes with exhaust flanges to weld to the heater boxes, to match the header you are currently using. This means you have real gaskets instead of that stupid exhaust doughnut that always leaks! Remember that exhaust tubing is measured on the OUTSIDE DIAMETER. A decent guideline is to run 1 3/8" for up to 90hp, 1 1/2" from 90-140hp, and 1 5/8" from 140-175hp. Above this you need a larger exhaust tubing, which we do offer but they cost more! These headers feature a 1 7/8" collector, which is sized properly for engines using up to 1 5/8" primaries. These DO fit under the rear apron too! Each one is hand made by a master exhaust system craftsman for YOUR car! Remember that Exhaust Tubing is measured on the OUTSIDE (Not Inside), stock is 1 1/4". We recommend 1 5/8" for applications up to 190hp, 1 3/4" size is needed for 190hp or greater, and get 1 7/8" for 230HP and above! With this system Cylinder 1 and 3 J-pipes are INCLUDED. Note that this header is only available in the "Narrow" 1 and 3 primary locations, otherwise the primaries wind up being too long and power suffers. , Because the 1 and 3 j pipes on a lowdown header are very narrow and close to the engine to keep the pipe length as short as possible, they will NOT clear the thermostat. VW Sedan & Bus Street Header, 1966-74 1300-1600cc Based Engines are an economical choice for a Street Header system. The 1 3/8" size is what you should use on stock size valve heads. These systems are good to about 110hp before becoming too restrictive. These headers use stock heater boxes or replacement J-pipes on stock style engines.

If you choose the black/raw one, it is HIGHLY SUGGESTED that you remove the paint on the exhaust and paint it with some POR-20 (silver, black, or gray) that won't flake off. Obviously the ceramic and stainless steel versions do not have this issue.
