Genuine Bosch 009 points have a white stripe on them (Called "Tiger Stripe" points). You can use regular late beetle points if you keep RPMs below 6K, and it costs 1/3 the 009 set! But genuine 009 points (with the white stripe) are good to 8000 RPMs. The higher spring tension on these points WILL wear out the rubbing block faster than other points due to higher spring pressure. It's also interesting that if you buy a brand new 009 distributor it doesn't come with these genuine 009 points, it has the cheap ones (01-010)! Physically they are interchangeable, but the spring tension is totally different. The 01-010s are good to ~6k RPM, the Tiger Stripes are good to 8k.

We prefer NGK Spark Plugs over Bosch. The BP5ES is a projected tip spark plug, suitable for carbureted VW engines. The projector tip runs better under all conditions than conventional spark plug tips do (which tend so shroud the spark). This is a correct heat range for almost all VW Beetles and most VW busses and VW Vanagons. If the engine runs HOT, you can use the NGK BP6ES instead, being one step colder.

The BP5ES has 14mm threads, and is 3/4" reach (long). It fits the Type 4 heads, but it also fits the newer Factory VW DP heads, because the 1/2" reach plugs had a tendency to strip, so the 3/4" reach is an improvement.

Bosch Ignition Coil, 1983-91 Vanagon, 211-905-115D (00-061) is a Genuine Bosch Ignition Coil for factory electronic ignition in 1983-1991 VW Vanagons. These coils are different than the internal ballast Bosch Blue Coils used on earlier models. These fail from repeated exposure to heat and vibration. Often a coil will work fine under light loads, but will miss intermittently under higher loads (throttle). If you have changed plugs, cap, rotor, and wires, and still have a miss, the ignition coil is the most likely suspect, with the Hall Sensor the 2nd one to look out for.

What is not fully understood by many is that the the coil usually tests out OK with the ohmmeter, unless it has already failed completely. "Ohms" won't tell you if the internal insulation has degraded which causes misfires once they get hot. So periodic replacement of this part is a wise move, most of them are well over 20 years old, so you just replace it because it's time.
