These are often shot, with owners resorting to using a stick instead! Don't be a tightwad, replace those shot struts before the hatch hits your significant other and you'll really be regretting it then!We strongly recommend that you replace both struts at the same time, if you only replace one it significantly shortens the lifespan since it's having to work so hard, and ultimately costs you more money. Some Vanagon owners put this stiffer strut on BOTH sides to accommodate extra weight on the tailgate (Ladders, etc).
