These nuts should NOT be re-used. The red "sealer" prevents oil from leaking out the studs. This is the secondary seal, the first being the Black O-ring that slips on the main saddle stud.

These do NOT fit Type 4 engines, only Type 1 based engines. Each engine needs 6 of these nuts!

When these were originally made, the manufacturer (not VW guys) made them too thick. This is a problem because the sump studs are too short to work with 2 thick gaskets. So we had them re-make them with a THIN material, and they work sweet!

Oil Strainer, 1700, 1800, and 2000cc Type 4 Engines,021-115-175 should be periodically replaced. We do not recommend replacing them EVERY oil change, but maybe once every year or 2. They can be cleaned and re-used, if you use new gaskets at the time of the work
