4340 Forged Chromoly Type 1 Crankshaft, 78mm Stroke, Type 1 Rod Journals, 003-4378VW is a fantastic stroker crankshaft for budget builders. Made from 4340 Forged Chromoly, this will rev as fast as your connecting rods and pistons will allow! 4340 Cranks are a step above cast and 4140 chromoly, and are great for applications around and over 200hp! The 78mm stroke is an excellent choice for bus and type 3 engines, it works best when used with 5.5" Rods, and "B" Piston and Cylinder Sets. This is a new crankshaft, so both Main and Rod Journals are STANDARD.

Case Clearancing for a 78mm crankshaft is not a big deal, the bigger the bore the less clearancing you'll have! If you have a small bore, you may have some clearancing for the rod nuts, at the cylinder spigots, and a little bit at the roof of the case also.

Another method is a rod length change. The logic behind this combo is as follows. "B" Pistons are designed for 5.4" rods. Since you are using a 78mm crankshaft, that's a 4mm smaller stroke (1/2 at the top, and 1/2 at the bottom). 2mm = .080" lower piston at TDC. We use .100" LONGER rods to put the piston .020" higher than stock, very easy to shim for, and you may not need shims at all!

Be sure to check piston skirt to Crankshaft CW Clearance during assembly, but this is usually not a problem due to the 5.5" rods!

These cranks are a GREAT way to build an engine with more grunt ON A BUDGET!!!
